Tire Maintenance Tips

Tires are your vehicle's only point of contact with the road. Spending just a few minutes each month on tire maintenance can ensure they perform optimally.

Check Your Air Pressure Once a Month

Maintain proper tire inflation to prevent damage, as underinflation is the primary cause of tire issues. Check your tire pressure monthly using the recommended pressure found on your vehicle's placard, located in the owner's manual, inside the gas tank lid, on the driver's side door edge, or door post. Do not use the pressure listed on the tire sidewall, as this indicates the tire's maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure for your vehicle. Remember to also check the spare tire's pressure regularly to avoid being stranded. Ensure the spare tire bolts are the correct fit if you have aftermarket rims. Improper inflation can accelerate tire wear and negatively impact handling.

Keep these points in mind:

* Check tire pressure when tires are cold. Even a short drive can heat tires. If you must drive to add air, check the pressure beforehand.

* Tire pressure fluctuates with temperature, changing 1-2 PSI for every 10-degree (Fahrenheit) change.

* Tire pressure must be equal on each axle but may differ between the front and rear. * Secure valve caps tightly to protect against dust, dirt, and leaks. Replace missing caps immediately.

* While checking pressure, inspect tires for embedded objects or deformities.

Tread Depth

Maintain control of your vehicle by ensuring your tires have adequate tread depth to avoid hydroplaning and skidding. The minimum legal tread depth is 1/16th of an inch. A simple way to check your tires is with the penny test. Insert a penny into the tire tread. If Lincoln’s head is partially covered, your tires have sufficient tread. If you can see his entire head, it’s time for new tires. Also, inspect your tires for uneven wear, which can reduce their lifespan. If you suspect irregular wear, consult Lansdale Automotive.

Rotation

To ensure even tire wear, rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or according to the recommendations in your vehicle's owner's manual.

Potential Tire Troubles:

Tires are vulnerable to curb damage. Approach curbs cautiously, as high speeds or improper angles can lead to cracks. Whenever possible, steer clear of potholes and road debris. Practice smooth acceleration and deceleration. Consult your owner's manual for maximum load capacity, as overloading can reduce tire lifespan. Always replace tires with the original equipment specifications for size, type, and speed rating.
